Your reception area is your handshake. It is the first moment a client steps out of the Glendora heat and into your world. Before your receptionist says hello, your lobby sign has already told the client whether you are established, professional, and detail-oriented—or cheap and temporary.
When it comes to interior reception signs, two materials dominate the market: Acrylic and Metal.
Both can look fantastic. Both are durable indoors. But they have very different price points and aesthetic qualities.
In this guide, we will compare Acrylic and Metal lobby signs to help you decide which material fits your brand and your budget.
1. Solid Metal Signs (Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Brass)
This is the gold standard (sometimes literally). Solid metal letters are cut from sheets of raw aluminum, steel, brass, or bronze using a waterjet or laser cutter.
The Look: “Permanence”
There is no faking the look of solid metal. The edges are crisp. The weight is substantial. The finish—whether brushed horizontal grain or mirror-polished—catches the light in a way that plastic simply cannot replicate.
Pros:
- Prestige: Nothing looks more expensive than solid stainless steel or brass.
- Durability: Indoors, these signs will literally last 100 years. They are bombproof.
- Finishes: available in specialized finishes like Oxidized Bronze or Titanium Gold.
Cons:
- Cost: This is the most expensive option. You are paying for raw commodity metal by the pound.
- Weight: Large solid metal letters are heavy. They require strong adhesive and stud-mounting into studs or blocking. You generally cannot mount these to a hollow drywall without anchors.
- Limited Colors: You are generally limited to the color of the metal (Silver, Gold, Bronze, Copper). If you want “Coca-Cola Red,” you have to paint the metal, which defeats the point of buying metal.
Price Point: $$$$ (High)
2. Acrylic Signs (Plexiglass)
Acrylic is a rigid plastic material that is the industry standard for signage. It is versatile, lightweight, and comes in glossy or matte finishes.
The Look: “Modern & Colorful”
Acrylic is glass-like. It has a high-gloss edge that looks very modern and tech-forward.
Pros:
- Infinite Colors: We can paint acrylic to match any Pantone color code. If your logo is specific (e.g., T-Mobile Pink), acrylic is the best base material.
- Laser Precision: Acrylic cuts easily on a laser, allowing for incredibly intricate logos and tiny text that a waterjet might struggle with on thick steel.
- Cost: Significantly cheaper than solid metal.
Cons:
- Scratches: Acrylic is softer than metal. If your cleaning crew wipes it with a dry, rough rag, it will develop “swirl marks” over time.
- “Plastic” Look: From the side, it looks like plastic. It doesn’t have the industrial grain of metal.
Price Point: $$ (Medium)
3. The “Secret” Hybrid: Metal-Laminate on Acrylic
Here is the industry secret that saves businesses thousands of dollars.
If you want the look of Solid Metal but the price of Acrylic, we use Metal Laminate.
We take a thick piece of acrylic (for depth) and bond a thin layer of real aluminum sheet (0.025″ thick) to the face.
The Result
- From the front, it looks exactly like solid brushed aluminum. You see the real metal grain.
- From the side, you see the edge of the acrylic (which we can paint silver to match).
- The Cost: About 40-50% less than solid metal plate.
Why Choose Laminate?
Most clients cannot tell the difference once the sign is mounted on the wall. Unless you climb a ladder and inspect the edge with a magnifying glass, a laminate letter looks just like a solid aluminum letter. It is lighter (easier to install) and much friendlier to the startup budget.
R&R Signs produces hundreds of laminate reception signs every year for this exact reason.
Durability Comparison
| Feature | Solid Metal | Acrylic / Laminate |
| :— | :— | :— |
| Indoor Lifespan | Lifetime+ | 20+ Years |
| Outdoor Lifespan | Excellent (oxidizes) | Good (Face fades 7-10 yrs) |
| Scratch Resistance | High | Low (use microfiber) |
| Impact Resistance | Very High | Medium (can crack) |
Installation Methods (The “Floating” Look)
Regardless of whether you choose metal or acrylic, the installation method makes the sign.
We almost always recommend Stud Mounting with Spacers.
Instead of gluing the letters flat to the wall (which looks like a sticker), we drill holes in the backs of the letters and insert threaded studs. We then drill corresponding holes in your wall and slide the letters in, using 1/4″ or 1/2″ plastic spacers to hold the letter off the wall.
This creates a natural shadow behind the text. As the lighting in your lobby changes throughout the day, the shadows move, giving the sign a 3D, architectural presence.
Which Should You Buy?
- Buy Solid Metal If: You are a law firm, investment bank, or government agency where “stability” and “permanence” are the core brand values. Or if you simply have the budget and want the absolute best.
- Buy Acrylic If: Your logo relies on specific, bright brand colors (Tech, Pediatric, Creative Agencies).
- Buy Laminate If: You want the prestigious look of brushed silver or gold, but you want to save cash for other startup costs.
At R&R Signs, we have sample kits of all three. We can come to your Glendora office, hold the samples up against your wall paint, and show you exactly how the light hits the brushed aluminum versus the glossy acrylic.
